Powershift 2009

I wanted to bring light to an event that I’ll be attending from February 27 to March 2 called Power Shift 09. Back in the fall of 2007, there was the first Power Shift at my college the University of Maryland. About 6,000 young people came from all around the country for the 4 day event which contained workshops and trainings on different aspects of climate activism during the day, and a host of top notch speakers, musical performers, and movies at night. The event ended with a trip to DC where thousands of the students called for bold action on climate change from the Congress, and then lobbied their own representatives in record numbers. It was a fantastic event all around, and a great way to meet with fellow activists from all around the country and share stories and ideas for how to make the movement more effective.

Power Shift 2009 is going to be even bigger, with a goal of bringing 10,000 students to DC where the event is being held in the DC Convention Center. As far as I understand it the general structure will be similar, and there will be an even bigger and more forceful lobby day, along with the opportunity to do a direct action protest outside DC’s old polluting coal fired power plant. More to come on that later. Anyways, the reason I’m writing about Power Shift right now is because it costs money to go, however if you register before January 21st you can go at a discounted price, and as someone who has been to this event before, it’s totally worth it.

Here is the website for Power Shift 09: http://www.powershift09.org/

Hope to see you there!
