Judgement Day on Mountaintop Removal

Mountaintop removal is one of the most immoral practices going on in this country today.  Robert Kennedy has referred to it has a holocaust.  This past summer, I attended a Senate hearing about it.  Our top climate scientist James Hansen has gotten arrested protesting it.  When the EPA allowed the vast majority of permits held over from the Bush Administration a few months ago, I slammed them for it in an op-ed column.

“Jackson, the EPA and Obama have made a mockery of science. They placed the coal industry above human decency. They let the people of Appalachia’s hopes slip right through their fingers. In so doing, they’ve undermined (no pun intended) the moral integrity of America and failed West Virginia, as well as the rest of the country.”

Now, a new round of permits topping over 100 is going before the EPA and the Obama Administration.  Will they approve or reject them?  A more applicable question is how many they will approve or reject.  According to Climate Progress, EPA has already moved to reel in one of the largest permits in West Virginia history.  I’m unsure what to take away from this.

Watthead has a very in depth and detailed post which calls this the “moment of truth for appalachia”.  Here’s an excerpt below…

“For better or worse, the forthcoming EPA list of environmentally risky projects will mark an important step closer to the establishment of clear, public standards for what level of environmental impact the agency will allow or prohibit at MTR sites proposed throughout Appalachia. The EPA has so far avoided establishing any such clear public standard.

With hundreds of mountaintop removal sites now in the balance, this is the moment of truth for the EPA,  Administration Lisa Jackson, and President Obama to make good on promises to reign in this clearly environmentally devastating practice.”

I’m going to leave you with a very revealing video of two security guards who were sent to a mountaintop removal protest, and came away with an unfavorable view of the practice.
