Henry Waxman, the Chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee, has written a great letter to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton about why the US should not cooperate with Canada at constructing a nearly 4,000 mile oil pipeline that would transport Canada’s controversial tar sands oil to the US Gulf Coast. For reasons why the tar sands are environmentally destructive, see my column from last year. Below is a notable quote from the letter Waxman sent..
“The State Department’s decision on whether to permit this pipeline represents a critical choice about America’s energy future.
This pipeline is a multi-billion dollar investment to expand our reliance on the dirtiest source of transportation fuel currently available. While I strongly support the President’s efforts to move America to a clean energy economy, I am concerned that the Keystone XL pipeline would be a step in the wrong direction.”
I’m interested to see if and how Clinton will respond. It’s very hypocritical for the Obama Administration to champion clean energy and reducing emissions and foreign oil dependence, and then help build this pipeline.
